Irrigation Valve Troubleshooting Guide

How an Irrigation Valve Actually Works

Understanding how the valve works makes troubleshooting much easier.

When your controller starts a zone:

  1. The controller sends power to the solenoid.
  2. The solenoid opens a small internal port.
  3. Water escapes from the upper chamber of the valve.
  4. Pressure beneath the diaphragm lifts it open.
  5. Water flows to the sprinklers.

When the controller shuts the zone off:

  1. The solenoid closes.
  2. Water refills the upper chamber.
  3. The larger surface area above the diaphragm creates more closing force than the smaller area below.
  4. The diaphragm seals against the valve seat.
  5. Water flow stops.
The most common misconception
The valve doesn't stay closed because there's more pressure above the diaphragm. Pressure is nearly equal above and below. It stays closed because the top has a larger surface area — more area means more force. Once that clicks, diagnosing valve problems becomes much more logical.

Technician Field Tests

These are the quick diagnostic tests irrigation technicians use every day to isolate problems before replacing parts.

Field Test #1 — Manual Bleed Test

Purpose: Determine whether the problem is electrical or hydraulic.

How: Use the valve's manual bleed screw, or loosen the solenoid roughly a quarter turn.

  • The valve opens → your plumbing is working. Focus on controller, wiring, decoder, or solenoid.
  • The valve still won't open → the problem is likely no water supply, a damaged diaphragm, a clogged valve, or internal failure.

Field Test #2 — Swap the Solenoid

One of the fastest diagnostic tricks in the field.

  1. Remove a solenoid from a nearby valve that is working.
  2. Install it on the non-working valve.
  3. Run the zone.
  • Now it works → the original solenoid has failed. Replace only the solenoid.
  • Nothing changes → the solenoid isn't the problem. Keep diagnosing.
Only swap identical valves
Different manufacturers — and even different valve series from the same brand — use incompatible solenoids. Only swap between matching models.

Field Test #3 — Listen Test

Stand beside the valve while someone starts the zone.

  • No sound → likely electrical.
  • Small click → power is probably reaching the solenoid. Investigate the diaphragm or valve internals.
  • Buzzing → possible constant voltage, damaged solenoid, or controller issue.

Field Test #4 — Feel Test

Place two fingers on the solenoid while someone activates the zone.

  • A distinct click means the solenoid is energizing.
  • No movement usually points to a failed solenoid, broken field wire, bad wire connection, or controller/decoder issue.

Problem 1 — Valve Won't Open

Most common causes:

  • Burned-out solenoid
  • No voltage at the valve
  • Broken field wire
  • Plugged bleed ports
  • Flow control turned completely down
  • Torn diaphragm (reverse-flow valves)

Diagnose in this order:

  1. Can you manually open the valve? Yes → plumbing is fine, focus electrical. No → keep going.
  2. Did swapping the solenoid fix it? Yes → replace solenoid. No → continue.
  3. Is the flow control fully open? Some valves won't operate correctly if the flow control is closed all the way down.
  4. Inspect the diaphragm for tears, warping, debris, or clogged ports. Clean ports with a paper clip — never enlarge them with a drill bit.

Problem 2 — Valve Won't Shut Off

If the valve remains open after the controller shuts off, pressure isn't building properly above the diaphragm. Common causes include:

  • Debris under the diaphragm
  • Damaged diaphragm
  • Missing or stuck solenoid plunger
  • Manual bleed left open
  • Plugged diaphragm filter
  • Flow control adjusted too far open under very low flow
  • Constant voltage keeping the solenoid energized
  • Bonnet leak
  • Valve installed backwards
Technician tip
A valve that stays open is rarely just "stuck." Ask instead: why can't the upper chamber build enough closing force? That question usually leads straight to the fault.

Problem 3 — Valve Is Seeping

Signs include a puddle around one sprinkler, a slow drip, or one head that never fully shuts off.

Usually caused by:

  • Damaged valve seat
  • Worn diaphragm
  • Damaged solenoid seat
  • Dirt preventing the valve from sealing

Common Mistakes

  • Replacing the entire valve before testing the solenoid
  • Assuming a clicking solenoid means the valve is healthy
  • Forgetting to close the manual bleed after testing
  • Enlarging bleed ports with a drill bit
  • Replacing sprinkler heads when the valve is actually leaking
  • Ignoring flow direction arrows during installation

Not necessarily. A click means the solenoid is likely receiving power, but the valve may still fail to open because of a damaged diaphragm, plugged bleed port, closed flow control, or a lack of water supply.
